For six months, I developed and implemented a digital solution for the historically contextualized musical analysis of sheet music. This ongoing project is part of a larger musicology research initiative supported by the European Union1.

Beyond the extensive technical, methodological, and musicological knowledge I gained, I had the opportunity to carry out an end-to-end project — starting with gathering requirements from musicologists and working closely with my supervisor to design an interface and align on a coherent conceptual framework. We then explored ergonomic approaches to analytical gestures, and I eventually had the chance to present my contribution to the researchers of the European project. The sketches and drafts gradually took shape, culminating in an organized and functional implementation, which still needs to be tested in real-world use.

The Tonalities software2 enables work on a musical score by relying on a theoretical treatise on music. By targeting specific areas of the score and navigating within the treatises, the user can produce annotations and build musicological objects around the score. The software is also designed for collaboration, allowing analyses to be compared in order to shed light on certain controversies.
